American Emergency Vehicles (AEV) recently delivered a Type 3 ambulance to Somerset (PA) Area Ambulance Association, an organization established in 1966 to serve Somerset county with emergency medical services (EMS). Somerset Area Ambulance Association has two stations and 82 employees, with its main station, Station 900, located on Wood Duck Road in Somerset, while Station 902, its sub-station, is located on Lincoln Highway in Stoystown.

“Somerset had bought a truck from us two years ago when I got the opportunity to sell them an ambulance,” says Todd Fry, salesman for Speclin Emergency Vehicles, who sold the new Type 3 ambulance to Somerset. “On this second vehicle, Somerset liked the layout of the truck, the price, the service, and the follow-up that comes with the partnership between Speclin and the customer.”

Fry says the new Somerset rig is on a 2021 Ford E-350 DRW (door, rear wheel drive) two-wheel drive chassis with a 138-inch wheelbase, powered by a 7.3-liter V-8 gasoline engine. He notes that the rig is on AEV’s FleetHawk model, with a patient module that’s 146 inches long, 90 inches wide, and with 70 inches of headroom. “The vehicle has a CPR seat and telemetry area to hold a monitor, a child safety seat in the attendant’s seat at the head of the cot, a Stryker Performance Load system with a charger for the Stryker PowerCOT, and a bench seat on the curb side of the rig,” he notes.

Randy Barr, AEV’s director of sales, notes that al the seating positions in the Somerset patient module have Per4Max four-point seatbelts, and the rollover protection in the module includes cushions in potential head strike areas, and no sharp points on any cabinetry or seating. In addition, Barr notes, all handles on the ambulance are antimicrobial, and all doors and compartments have locks. “They have a correctional facility in their coverage area, so locking compartments and doors are important,” he says.

Fry adds that the Somerset Type 3 ambulance has all Whelen LED warning lighting, seven Whelen red lens emergency lights with one in front and two each on the sides and the rear, and six Whelen LED scene lights, two on each side and two at the rear.
