The Orangeburg (SC) County Council is getting creative with what to do with an old ambulance.
Add a new chassis to the existing ambulance body.
The council voted on Monday night to approve a $113,000 contract with ETA Service to place the existing ambulance body on a new chassis. That’s a bargain considering an new ambulance could cost the county over $270,000, according to the Times & Democrat.
Orangeburg County replaced five out of the eight ambulances it has. Only one ambulance will be remounted.
“It doesn’t take but a couple of years to put 200,000 to 300,000 miles on the ambulances because they run 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young.
“This is a way of saving taxpayers money by doing the remount option. That’s a good price for the remount to get another three or four years out of that particular unit.”
